What Size Sauna Heater Do I Need? A Data-Backed Guide
This is the question that stops most sauna projects for a week. The room is decided, the wood is chosen, and then you reach the heater page and every model lists a kilowatt rating you have no way to judge.
The answer is arithmetic, not opinion. Every reputable manufacturer publishes the exact room volume each heater is built for, and once you know your own volume the choice narrows to two or three models.
We pulled the published specifications for 30 heaters across Harvia, HUUM, Saunum and Cozy Heat and worked out what the numbers actually say. Here is the short version, then the detail.
The 60-second answer
Measure your sauna room in cubic feet, then:
- Electric heater: cubic feet ÷ 50 = the kilowatts you need. Round up to the next size sold.
- Wood-burning stove: cubic feet ÷ 30 = the kilowatts you need.
A 6 by 8 foot room with a 7 foot ceiling is 336 cubic feet. That points to roughly 6.7 kW electric, so you buy a 7.5 kW or an 8 kW.
Then check the specific model. Every heater lists a minimum and a maximum room size, and your number has to sit inside that range, not merely below the maximum.

Step 1: measure the room, not the floor
Sauna heaters are rated by volume, not floor area. Multiply length by width by height, all in feet.
Use the interior dimensions of the finished room, measured inside the panelling, not the outside of the cabin. On a pre-built kit the interior is usually four to six inches smaller in each direction than the exterior footprint on the product page.
Ceiling height matters more than people expect, because it multiplies. Dropping a ceiling from 8 feet to 7 feet removes an eighth of the volume, and that is often the difference between two heater sizes. Most manufacturers also set a minimum ceiling height, typically 73 to 80 inches, below which the heater is not approved at all.
Step 2: adjust for anything that is not insulated wood
This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the reason some saunas never quite reach temperature.
A heater rating assumes an insulated timber room. Glass, tile, stone, concrete and exposed log walls all absorb and lose far more heat than an insulated panel. Manufacturers account for this by publishing what Harvia calls adjusted cubic feet: the effective volume the heater has to work against, which is larger than the geometric volume when the room contains those surfaces.
The exact adjustment is set by each manufacturer and printed in the installation manual for that model. We are not going to invent a coefficient here, because the manuals differ. What matters practically:
- A full glass front, a large picture window or a tiled floor pushes you toward the next heater size up.
- An all-timber insulated room with a small vision panel does not.
- If you are between two sizes and the room has a lot of glass, take the larger one and confirm against the manual.
Step 3: match your volume to a heater

Wood-burning stoves need almost twice the rating
This surprises people, and it is the single most useful thing in this guide.
Across the electric heaters we sell, the manufacturers rate roughly 50 cubic feet per kilowatt at the top of each range. Across the wood-burning stoves, the same manufacturers rate roughly 30 cubic feet per kilowatt.
So a 400 cubic foot room needs about 8 kW of electric heat, or about 13 kW of wood. A wood stove is not less effective, it simply loses a large share of its output up the flue, and its rating is honest about that. Judging a wood stove by an electric rule of thumb is how people end up with a stove that never brings the room up to temperature.

A bigger heater is not a safety margin
Every heater in the tables above has a minimum room size as well as a maximum. That minimum is not a marketing detail.
An oversized heater in a small room reaches the thermostat setpoint quickly and then spends the session cycling off and on. The air gets hot while the stones never fully saturate with heat, which is the opposite of what a traditional sauna is for: the stones are the thermal battery that gives you steam when you pour water. A heater that keeps switching off produces a room that feels sharp and dry rather than enveloping.
The practical rule: your volume should sit comfortably inside the published range, ideally in the middle, not one cubic foot under the ceiling and not below the floor.
The electrical side, before you order
An electric sauna heater needs a dedicated circuit. This is worth checking with an electrician before the heater arrives, not after.
Across the models we carry, all run on 240 volts, single phase, and the current draw scales with output almost exactly:

Breaker size is specified per model in the installation manual and your local code governs, so treat this table as what to expect rather than what to install. The useful takeaway is that stepping from 6 kW to 8 kW usually means a heavier cable, and that is far cheaper to decide before the walls close than after.
What the heater price does not include
Two items catch people out, and both are genuine requirements rather than upsells.
Stones. Heaters ship empty. Capacity runs from 44 pounds on a compact wall model to 130 pounds on a large floor unit, and a box of sauna stones weighs 33 or 44 pounds depending on the brand. A heater with a 110 pound capacity therefore needs three boxes, not one. Stone size matters too: most electric heaters take 2 to 4 inch stones, while wood stoves take 4 to 6 inch.
A control unit. Some heaters have controls built into the body, such as the Harvia KIP series. Others, including the Spirit and Cilindro series and every HUUM heater, need a separate wall control, and it has to be compatible with that specific heater. Common questions
What size heater for a 6 by 8 foot sauna?
With a 7 foot ceiling that is 336 cubic feet, which calls for a 7.5 kW or 8 kW electric heater. The HUUM DROP 7.5kW covers 248 to 389 cubic feet and the Harvia The Wall SW80 covers 177 to 431.
Is a 6 kW heater enough?
For rooms up to roughly 300 cubic feet, yes. That is a 4 by 6 or 5 by 7 foot room with a standard ceiling, which suits two to three people.
Can a sauna heater be too powerful?
Yes, and the manufacturer tells you where the limit is. Every model publishes a minimum room size for exactly this reason.
Does a glass door change the calculation?
A single glass door on an otherwise insulated room, no. A full glass front or a large window, yes: size up and confirm against the installation manual.
Do I need 240 volts?
For every heater in this guide, yes, on a dedicated circuit. There are 120 volt sauna heaters on the market, but they are limited to very small cabins.
